Dipropylene glycol (also known as oyybispropanol, 2,2-dihydroxyisopropylether, 1,1-oxydipropane-2-ol, di-1,2-propylene glycol, and DPG) is a clear, colourless, viscous liquid with a characteristic odour and the formula C6H14O3. It is fully miscible in water and is also miscible with many organic solvents. This solvency, combined with low toxicity and a low evaporation rate, makes DPG a chemical which is a very useful reactive intermediate in a range of industries.
Dipropylene glycol (DPG) comes in two grades: industrial grade and fragrance grade. And both grades of DPG are available in our company.

Dipropylene glycol (DPG) Industrial grade is a by-product of the production of monopropylene glycol with a purity greater than 99%. DPG is a water soluble, medium viscosity, hygroscopic liquid with low vapor pressure.
Dipropylene glycol industrial grade is only used for technical applications, such as DPG industrial grade as a solvent, coupling agent and chemical intermediate is widely used in many industries such as polyurethane raw materials, paints and coatings, plasticizers, UPR resins, etc
Dipropylene glycol (DPG) fragrance grade
Dipropylene glycol (DPG) fragrance grade is a distilled product with a purity greater than 99.5% as dipropylene glycol, and only the fragrance grade is appropriate for use in perfumes and personal care products.
Dipropylene glycol fragrance grade, is used as a solvent due to the fact that it is odorless, colorless and has a high boiling point and a low toxicity. Not only can it act as a carrier, it is also a diluent, or a compound used to dilute the strength of fragrance oils. This compound can be used both by home fragrance makers and commercial fragrance makers such as Perfumes, Skin care, Deodorants/antiperspirants, Hair care.
Dipropylene glycol can bind and carry both essential oils and fragrance oils (blended essential oils). The compound works in perfumes due its ability to help attaching to the fragrance molecules and making them slower to disperse. The strength of a perfume can be changed by raising or lowering the ratio of dipropylene glycol in the formula.

Preparation ethod of Dipropylene Glycol (DPG)
The dipropylene glycol product is mainly from the by-product in the process of propylene glycol production by cyclopropyl water method, and the yield is small. Some manufacturers use sodium methanol and other base catalysts to synthesize dipropylene glycol products, propylene glycol, propylene oxide and catalyst mixed at 130-200℃, 0.1-1.0MPa pressure conditions, synthesis of dipropylene glycol crude products, and then refined and purified, to obtain dipropylene glycol products.
In our company, the production process of dipropylene glycol involves the following steps:
step1. Catalytic Condensation: Propylene oxide and propylene glycol are condensed to produce dipropylene glycol. This reaction takes place in the presence of an acidic ionic liquid as a catalyst. The reaction conditions are as follows:
Temperature: 80 to 150°C, preferably 100 to 120°C
Pressure: 0.1 to 1 MPa, preferably 0.2 to 0.5 MPa
Reaction Time: 1 to 5 hours
Catalyst Amount: The acidic ionic liquid catalyst is used at 0.2 to 5% of the total mass of propylene oxide and propylene glycol.
Mass Ratio: The mass ratio of propylene oxide to propylene glycol is in the range of 0.1 to 1:1.
step 2. Catalyst Separation: After the condensation reaction, the reaction product containing dipropylene glycol and the catalyst are separated through negative pressure distillation. The catalyst can be recycled for further use.
Compared to traditional methods, our process utilizes specific acidic ionic liquid catalysts at controlled temperature and pressure conditions. This results in several advantages:
High Catalytic Activity: The ionic liquid catalyst used in this method is highly active, leading to a high conversion rate in the reaction.
Reduced Freezing Point: The dipropylene glycol product obtained has a lower freezing point, addressing challenges related to winter transportation and storage.
Enhanced Purity: After refinement and purification, the product can achieve a purity of over 99.9%, with minimal color and odor. The product does not crystallize at minus 5 degrees Celsius and the isomers are distributed evenly. This quality meets the requirements of high-end applications such as the production of daily chemical flavors and high-grade unsaturated resins.
Low Corrosion and Recyclability: The catalyst used in this process has low corrosion, and it is easy to recycle for multiple production cycles.
Process Simplicity: The reaction does not require high-temperature or high-pressure conditions, making it achievable with straightforward equipment and processes.
