Glycerin Preparation

The production methods of glycerin can be divided into two categories: the method of using natural oil as raw material, the glycerin obtained is called natural glycerin; The glycerin obtained by the synthesis method using propylene as raw material is called synthetic glycerin.

Natural Glycerin Production

Natural glycerin production typically involves deriving glycerin from natural sources such as vegetable oils(common oils used include soybean oil, palm oil, coconut oil, and olive oil) or animal fats (such as lard, tallow, and fish oils). These oils are composed of triglycerides, which are molecules made up of glycerin and fatty acids. When these oils undergo processes like hydrolysis, saponification, or transesterification (as in biodiesel production), glycerin is released as a by-product.

In the contemporary context, biodiesel production is a significant source of natural glycerin. During the transesterification process, where vegetable oils or animal fats are reacted with an alcohol (usually methanol), glycerin is produced as a by-product and is then purified.

In each of these methods, the glycerin obtained is initially crude and contains impurities. Therefore, it undergoes purification processes, which may include filtration, distillation, and treatment with activated carbon to remove any remaining impurities and color. The level of purification depends on the intended use of the glycerin. For example, pharmaceutical and food-grade glycerin requires higher purity compared to glycerin used for industrial purposes.

Synthetic Glycerin Production

Apart from natural glycerin, synthetic glycerin is also produced industrially. Synthetic glycerin involves chemical reactions that convert specific raw materials into glycerin. Let’s explore two standard methods used for artificial glycerin production.

Propylene Chlorination Method

This is the most important production method in synthetic glycerin, which consists of four steps, namely, high temperature chlorination of propylene, chloro-propylene hypochlorination, saponification of dichloropropanol and hydrolysis of epichlorohydrin.

Glycerin hydrolysis from epiclorohydrin is carried out in an aqueous solution of 10% sodium hydroxide and 1% sodium carbonate at 150℃ and 1.37MPa carbon dioxide pressure to generate an aqueous solution of glycerin containing sodium chloride with a content of 5-20%. After concentration, desalting and distillation, glycerin with a purity of more than 98% is obtained.

Propylene and Peracetic Acid Reaction

Another method of synthetic glycerin production involves the reaction between propylene and peracetic acid. The peracetic acid converts enol propanol into epichlorohydrin, which further hydrolyzes to glycerin. This method does not require a catalyst, and peracetic acid production occurs through ethylene and oxygen gas-phase oxidation.

The glycerin production from propylene and peracetic acid is carried out continuously in a reaction distillation tower. The glycerol-water solution is obtained at the bottom of the building, while the top of the tower separates ethyl acetate solvent and water. This method offers high selectivity and yield and simplifies the reaction process.

Glycerin Application

Glycerin has more than 1500 known uses, from skin care to pharmaceutical applications to explosives. It’s impossible to list all of them, so we’ll just talk about the first four broad categories of applications.

A collection of personal care products including bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a loofah, towel, and bath salts, with a steamy background, suggestive of a spa or bathroom setting.

Cosmetics and Personal Care:

  • Glycerin is highly valued in the cosmetics and personal care industry due to its moisturizing and humectant properties.
  • It’s a key ingredient in a vast array of products including lotions, creams, soaps, and shampoos.
  • Its ability to attract and retain moisture helps in keeping the skin and hair hydrated, making it a staple in skincare and haircare formulations.

Pharmaceuticals and Medical Applications:

Glycerin is one of the most widely used ingredients in medical prescriptions, second only to water. It has a wide of range of applications in this industry, and is often used to help make prescriptions more palatable.

  • In the pharmaceutical industry, glycerin is used as a solvent, sweetener, and humectant in various formulations such as cough syrups and oral care products.
  • It’s also utilized in topical ointments and creams for its soothing and moisturizing properties, beneficial in treating dry skin and other skin conditions.
  • Glycerin plays a role in the formulation of gel capsules and suppositories, aiding in medication delivery.

Food Industry:

  • As a food additive, glycerin serves multiple functions: it acts as a sweetener, a humectant (helping to retain moisture), and a preservative.
  • It’s commonly used in baked goods, candies, and meat products to maintain freshness and enhance texture.
  • Glycerin’s non-toxic nature makes it a safe and versatile ingredient in food production.

Industrial Applications:

  • Explosives Production: The manufacturing of nitroglycerin, a key component in various explosives, is one of the primary industrial uses of glycerin. Nitroglycerin is produced by the nitration of glycerin, typically involving a reaction with nitric acid. Glycerin enhances the burning rate of explosive mixtures and acts as an oxidizer in the production of nitric acid from ammonia.
  • Paint and Varnish Industry: In the production of paints and varnishes, glycerin is used as a plasticizer to improve texture and consistency. It helps paints and varnishes achieve the right viscosity and flow, enhancing application and finish quality.
  • Textile Industry: In textile manufacturing, glycerin may be used in dyeing fabric because of its viscosity, hygroscopic properties, and its ability to penetrate fabric and suspend dyes. Surprisingly, glycerin also finds a role in reducing static cling in textiles.
  • Agrochemicals: Glycerin is utilized in the agrochemical industry, especially in the formulation of pesticides and herbicides. It serves as a solvent and stabilizer, aiding in the effective delivery and longevity of these products.
